Dr. Joseph Scherger's career in family medicine has spanned 40 years. His training also included a Master's in Public Health when he studied nutrition at the University of Washington. He has always included preventive medicine and wellness in his medical practice. He is physically active with running, one of many choices for keeping fit. Until 2013 he followed the nutrition guidelines promoted by leading organizations such as the American Heart Association. In 2013 he expanded his knowledge in nutrition by reading the books of physician leaders such as William Davis and David Perlmutter.
One of his partners in practice (and now his personal physician) Hessam Mahdavi introduced him to functional medicine, a focus on treating the causes of disease rather than just treating disease with drugs and procedures. Following this new knowledge and approach, Dr. Scherger greatly improved his own health and the health of many of his patients. This book is that story, loaded with information and scientific references that validate this exciting new approach to nutrition and good health. Dr. Sherger wrote this for his patients. He summarizes current publications, and freely gives opinions, as most patients likely aren't going to try to read and understand that volume of material.The subject matter is diet, and SPOILER ALERT...he has come around to the low carb "revolution". He clearly states that Dr. Atkins was mostly correct, and explains what he lacked.
I have had the occasion to work with Dr. Sherger professionally (I am a RN), and I consider him to be the finest Family Care physician I have worked with. That's personal opinion, but for me, it gave added weight to what he says.
So far, I have lost 45 lbs in 5 months following the advice in the book.

Straightforward look at weight gain and the simple answer. Nothing really new, but so succinctly put that you do not need another diet book.

I read your book and was impressed at your vast knowledge of the subject. I took your advice to heart and eliminated wheat and grains and solved my fluctuating weight issues. You spoke of the importance of setting goals and I agree whole heartedly, it does make me stay on course. I'd like to share my personal motto with you A plan without a goal is just a wish. Dr. Scherger's simplicity in writing makes the book easy to read and understand. It is a small book, but I am amazed by the amount of good information it contains. Dr. Scherger has included daily meal plans, which makes it easier and practical for us to start eating healthy. The 3rd edition of his book includes an extensive resources, and recipes from Ms. Barbara Rogers.

Excellent book to learn a safe and practical approach to be come lifelong lean and fit. Dr. Scherger has the gift of making challenging subject matter understandable and useful. In this book he takes the reader on his life's quest to become healthier and to then share this knowledge with his patients and ultimately the world. Dr. Scherger is my personal physician. I had an annual physical lately and he noticed a few markers that were not favorable. This book could change your life for the better. All of us would like to grow old, so long as we could remain reasonably healthy. Weil, reading this book can help. Not only that, it is a quick read and easy to understand. My wife and I are octogenarians, and we already made some additional changes to a more healthful diet and appreciate even more the importance of exercise.
